Just months before the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world, The Swan’s House flew onto the shopping scene of Tarrytown, New York. And ever since then, co-owners Sara Swan and her husband Arthur Gandy have followed a simple recipe for success.

The specialty home goods and furniture store carries a carefully curated inventory of vintage items, including mirrors, sofas and lighting fixtures, all blended with modern pieces from designers all over the world, such as candles, bags, books, ornaments and more.

“We make things work by styling and merchandising,” said Swan. “We don't stray too far from our vision and stick to what feels right.” The Swan’s House boasts a unique shopping experience with an aesthetic ranging from mid-century to Hollywood Regency.

Swan spent most of her career in fine art and fashion design, while Gandy specialized in set design and building. They combined their strengths, and the couple opened the shop they had always dreamed of shortly after having their first child.

“We are both very passionate about vintage and sourcing furniture, art and design,” said Swan. “That was calling to us. We realized we had a real talent for it and started collecting tons of special pieces.”

With the pandemic in full swing soon after The Swan’s House opened, social media growth was vital in expanding the customer base, which continues to grow — as of Dec. 1, 2023, the store has over 58,000 followers on Instagram and over 30,000 on TikTok.

“I really enjoy creating content and being playful with the videos,” said Swan. “It's great to show off the best part of the business, which, in my opinion, is the sourcing.”

With Tarrytown only a train ride away from the Marist College campus, students can try The Swan’s House as a great way to shop outside of Poughkeepsie.
