Recent Releases Worth a Listen

Anticipation has been high for music lovers this season, with new releases from big-name artists such as 21 Savage, Bryson Tiller and Travis Scott. Analyzing the lyrics, instrumentals and moods these pieces bring gives insight into the most impressive music out now.

SAVAGE MODE II

21 Savage & Metro Boomin’

Following the iconic and musical masterpiece of 2016, “Savage Mode,” Metro Boomin’ and 21 Savage attempt to live up to the past standards in their new project released Oct. 2, “Savage Mode 2.” Despite the glossy guest stars such as Morgan Freeman, Drake and Young Thug, many can agree that SM1 remains at the top.

This sequel spells out an unearthly energy filled with romantic fallouts and desire for partnership, alluding to a mystic theme. Throughout the album, the varying songs seem to try too hard to differ, making the production not as it once was. Although this highly anticipated album has certain good hits, it seems the instrumental remains too similar.

ANNIVERSARY

Bryson Tiller

After struggling with pressures from the media and insecurities, Bryson Tiller released a ten-song EP “Anniversary” with a dominant feature from rapper Drake, that wrestles with self-doubt and ultimately leads the listeners to a sense of enlightenment. Exactly five years after his release of “Trapsoul,” Tiller lives up to the long wait and proves to have given this collection of songs his deepest emotions. Starting with “Years Go By,” he describes the looming pressure that kept him from releasing music sooner and his struggle in realizing that “you just gotta do you.”

Throughout the album, Tiller continues to focus on himself and portrays his darkest uncertainties. Across the past years, he’s grown into loving himself and preaches to his listeners that putting oneself forward is imperative. His characteristic admissions of love and heartbreak over soothing instrumental music go along with this singer’s constant theme and unforgettable energy. In ways this album was not meant for the fans, but for Tiller to reintroduce himself to the world of music. The beats and flow seemed to be similar, but the message is what makes “Anniversary” so exclusive and personal. In recent tweets, Tiller has hinted at releasing even more material this winter.

WHEN IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE

Giveon

Long Beach native Giveon, an upcoming R&B soul singer, released a four-song EP full of emotion and ache. His unique voice encapsulates listeners, drawing them in yearning for more. His first studio album “Take Time,” released in 2020, sets the stage for the ambiance that will follow.

Starting “When It’s All Said and Done” with a one-minute introduction, Giveon explores a past relationship that proved to be toxic, although the two are drawn toward each other. The love story told through his voice could be relatable to many. The way his voice fluctuates broadcasts the heartfelt emotions this heartbreak brought. This EP brings forth an immaculate aura that gives off calming, yet authentic, sensations. To finish off this short set he uses the last song, “Stuck on You,” to encapsulate his message that he is stuck on her and knows it is unhealthy –– yet can’t resist.

What makes Giveon so incomparable is his range and ability to hit notes, making the instrumental matter less than the pure singing and concept of his work.

FRANCHISE

Travis Scott (feat. Future, Young Thug, and M.I.A)

The chaotic nature of this single is not surprising when taking into account the various artists and their abilities on this track. The single, “Franchise,” released alongside Travis Scott’s new partnership with McDonald’s, explores the different partnerships he has had in the past, as well. In the music video, Scott hints at a new drink, “Cacti,” adding to his past partnerships with Nike, Fortnite and more.

The lively beat of this single makes it one to listen to raise the energy in a scene or to boost a crowd. Although this beat is one of a kind, the lyrical set lacks meaning, making it a song that can get old if listened to repeatedly.
