Frankie’s Spot Hits the Spot: A Review of the Cab’s New Late Night Go-To

As a second semester freshman, my experience with the Cabaret, affectionately called “The Cab” by Marist students, is religious. It is a near daily occurrence to make the long, yet noble trek to the Student Center at 10 p.m., order a bowl, pick out a drink of choice and confidently say “U-Pick, please”, at the register, only dipping a bit into my Thrifty Cash. My love for the Cab began the second week of the first semester, where the lines for rice bowls and burritos at the Korean-inspired Chick-n-Bap would bring lines well worth the wait.

But Marist Dining is changing things up for the second semester, announcing the release of their new restaurant, Frankie’s Spot within the Cabaret. Reminiscent of popular chain restaurants like Chipotle or Moe’s Southwest Grill, Frankie’s Spot is serving up nachos, rice bowls, burritos and quesadillas, all while offering toppings like pico de gallo, pickled onions, sour cream, salsas and guacamole (for an added fee of $2.39).

I had the chance to try out their menu, including a rice bowl, quesadilla and nachos, as well as a selection of their meats, including the fajita chicken, beef barbacoa and pork carnitas. What impressed me the most was the customizable options available. While I preferred the beef and pork options over the chicken, all of it was good. In my opinion, the guac is a must-have at Frankie’s Spot, and I regret not getting it every time.

In comparison to that of Chick-n-Bap, I feel that the flavors mix much better at Frankie’s Spot in terms of the offerings available. This isn’t to say that I don’t miss the cucumber kimchi from Chick-n-Bap, as it added a little something extra to every Chick-N-Bap bowl. Overall, the two restaurants are not very different and share a similar offering with food items – just with different flavors, sides and customizable options. It’s still a great option for those that loved its predecessor and I will certainly be visiting again.

When it comes to late night dining, Frankie’s Spot is hot, filling and perfect to hold you over until breakfast since it hits the spot.

Frankie’s Spot is located on Floor 2 of the Murray Student Center within the Cabaret, and is open every day from 4:00 PM to 12:00 PM. U-Pick meal swipes, Thrifty Cash, Marist Money, cash, credit and debit are all accepted.
